Claude 2

Major upgrade with 100K token context window; public availability via claude.ai; improved coding and reasoning capabilities.

Claude 2 launched in July 2023 marked Anthropic's first publicly available model accessible via the claude.ai web interface and API. The context window expanded dramatically from 9K to 100K tokens enabling analysis of large documents entire books and extensive datasets in a single conversation. On benchmarks Claude 2 scored 76.5% on the Bar exam (up from 73%) and 71.2% on Codex HumanEval coding tests. The model was trained on data through early 2023 and could generate documents up to 4000 tokens. Critics noted its stringent ethical alignment sometimes refused benign requests leading to debates about the alignment tax in AI. Claude 2 established Anthropic as a serious competitor to OpenAI by offering a capable conversational AI with a focus on safety. Deprecated January 2025 and retired July 2025.
