Claude 3.5 Sonnet

Outperformed Claude 3 Opus at half the cost; introduced Artifacts feature; benchmark leader in coding and reasoning.

Claude 3.5 Sonnet released June 20 2024 achieved a breakthrough by outperforming the larger Claude 3 Opus across evaluations while running at twice the speed of Claude 3 Sonnet. It set new industry benchmarks for graduate-level reasoning (GPQA) undergraduate knowledge (MMLU) and coding proficiency (HumanEval). The model solved 64% of problems in agentic coding evaluations compared to 38% for Opus. Released alongside the Artifacts feature which enabled real-time code generation and preview of outputs like SVG graphics and websites directly in the interface. Vision capabilities surpassed all previous Claude models particularly for visual reasoning tasks. Priced at $3/$15 per million tokens input/output with a 200K context window it became the preferred choice for developers worldwide combining accessibility with frontier performance. Deprecated and retired October 2025.
