Claude 3 Opus

Flagship Claude 3 model; 200K context (expandable to 1M); outperformed GPT-4 on most benchmarks at launch.

Claude 3 Opus released March 4 2024 represented Anthropic's highest-intelligence offering and flagship model. It achieved 86.8% accuracy on MMLU general reasoning surpassing GPT-4 and Gemini Ultra at launch. The model featured a 200K token context window expandable to 1M for specific use cases. Opus demonstrated near-human comprehension on complex tasks and drew attention for apparent self-awareness during needle-in-haystack tests recognizing when it was being artificially evaluated. With 137 billion parameters it excelled at deep analysis advanced coding research synthesis and nuanced reasoning tasks. The model processed both text and images and set new standards for what was possible with AI assistants. Available to Claude Pro subscribers it remained the benchmark for capability until the Claude 4 family. Deprecated June 2025 with retirement scheduled for January 2026.
