Claude 1

Anthropic's first LLM with 9K token context; Constitutional AI training for safer outputs; suited for general assistance and basic coding tasks.

Claude 1 was Anthropic's inaugural large language model released in March 2023. Built using Constitutional AI methodology to prioritize safety and reduce harmful outputs compared to contemporaries. Featured a 9K token context window (roughly double early ChatGPT) and handled tasks including summarization writing Q&A and basic coding. Early users noted it was easier to converse with and more steerable though it had limitations in complex math and reasoning. The model scored 73% on the Bar exam multiple choice section. Claude 1 was available only to select beta users and laid the groundwork for Anthropic's focus on helpful honest and harmless AI. Fully retired in November 2024.
